Excerpts
How to Manage When Everything is a Priority
How to Manage When Everything is a Priority was a show of young contemporary painting, featuring the work of Glasgow based artists Rosemary Scanlon, Ufuk Gueray, Connor Kelly and Erica Mendritzki, along with work by London based artists Susan Westbrook, Trevor Kiernander and Ian Gonczarow.
Bringing together diverse aesthetic sensibilities, from pop to expressionism, and addressing a broad spectrum of conceptual interests, from the manufacture of nostalgia to heroism and its failures, the exhibition presented a variety of tactics for navigating through the abundance of imagery in contemporary culture. How to manage a coherent artistic practice in an age of information overload? What to paint when everything is a priority? Today’s young artists have a whole lot of visual baggage to deal with in order to get down to the day-to-day business of making meaning in a cluttered and chaotic world. The painters in How to Manage when Everything is a Priority might not have all the answers, but the exhibition presented their bold and varied strategies for coping with the abundant priorities of contemporary visual culture.
